And so I wanted to be a part of that. I didn't know that was true.", "start": 125.04, "stop": 128.4, "id": 19}, {"text": " And so thank you so much Mary for embracing me and allowing me to learn. You don't?", "start": 236.16, "stop": 238.02, "id": 40}, {"text": " Okay, well briefly, Mr. will talk a little bit more about it, but in 2007", "start": 239.46, "stop": 245.62, "id": 41}, {"text": " he was ordered or issued a national security letter by the FBI", "start": 245.62, "stop": 252.54, "id": 42}, {"text": " to turn over a patriot's records.", "start": 252.54, "stop": 255.06, "id": 43}, {"text": " And Brewster said, no, no way. The FBI went on", "start": 255.06, "stop": 261.04, "id": 44}, {"text": " to gag him. Brewster's attorney is the other", "start": 261.04, "stop": 266.76, "id": 45}, {"text": " department heads who have that correct.", "start": 266.76, "stop": 268.4, "id": 46}, {"text": " And they weren't even allowed to speak to one another about the case. Brewster", "start": 269.36, "stop": 273.88, "id": 47}, {"text": " and the ACLU, which we have a couple members here, Chris Conley.", "start": 273.88, "stop": 279.28, "id": 48}, {"text": " [...] heard Chris. Chris, thank you so much, Chris, for your convictions. You're", "start": 279.28, "stop": 285.12, "id": 49}, {"text": " an example of what you know here about truly.", "start": 285.12, "stop": 286.92, "id": 50}, {"text": " John Gilmore of the EFF. I", "start": 478.44, "stop": 485.32, "id": 84}, {"text": " think how I would tell you about my experience.", "start": 485.32, "stop": 489.44, "id": 85}, {"text": " I made a choice that landed me in jail.", "start": 490.41999999999996, "stop": 496.12, "id": 86}, {"text": " And it was a continuation of many things in", "start": 498.22, "stop": 504.96, "id": 87}, {"text": " my labor and in my education.", "start": 504.96, "stop": 507.7, "id": 88}, {"text": " I said that I had enormous respect for the Bill of Rights, particularly the First", "start": 509.12, "stop": 515.64, "id": 89}, {"text": " Amendment. And for librarians, we have a Bill of Rights that was", "start": 515.64, "stop": 521.86, "id": 90}, {"text": " created and keeps changing.", "start": 521.86, "stop": 525.5, "id": 91}, {"text": " I'm not really sure for the best. However,", "start": 525.5, "stop": 530.32, "id": 92}, {"text": " I have been identified as", "start": 532.78, "stop": 539.24, "id": 93}, {"text": " somebody who really belongs in the intellectual freedom committees", "start": 539.24, "stop": 544.88, "id": 94}, {"text": " of the country.", "start": 544.88, "stop": 546.88, "id": 95}, {"text": " [...] was a chair of", "start": 563.6, "stop": 570.48, "id": 96}, {"text": " the International Freedom Committee.", "start": 570.48, "stop": 572.24, "id": 97}, {"text": " We were concerned, all of us were concerned with censorship.", "start": 574.08, "stop": 579.84, "id": 98}, {"text": " I was not quite satisfied with the brougaha about", "start": 581.24, "stop": 587.96, "id": 99}, {"text": " seeming sexy novels, dirty words", "start": 587.96, "stop": 593.98, "id": 100}, {"text": " novels, the awful language that we", "start": 593.98, "stop": 600.6, "id": 101}, {"text": " have these days. Languages are living", "start": 600.6, "stop": 607.12, "id": 102}, {"text": " thing, it changes.", "start": 607.12, "stop": 608.68, "id": 103}, {"text": " I attempted to broaden the concept of censorship and", "start": 612.94, "stop": 619.9, "id": 104}, {"text": " I decided that in truth, censorship is a way of", "start": 619.9, "stop": 626.88, "id": 105}, {"text": " creating barriers.", "start": 626.88, "stop": 629.04, "id": 106}, {"text": " And that is being done all the time. For example, secrecy by", "start": 630.88, "stop": 637.72, "id": 107}, {"text": " government is familiar to you.", "start": 637.72, "stop": 641.4, "id": 108}, {"text": " Advertising is full of lies", "start": 642.4, "stop": 647.68, "id": 109}, {"text": " and", "start": 647.68, "stop": 649.78, "id": 110}, {"text": " then there is the", "start": 649.78, "stop": 655.68, "id": 111}, {"text": " covert kind of censorship or barriers.", "start": 655.68, "stop": 661.06, "id": 112}, {"text": " And there are social prejudices such as racism, sexism,", "start": 661.7199999999999, "stop": 667.48, "id": 113}, {"text": " homophobia, classes where certain people, because they", "start": 668.42, "stop": 675.26, "id": 114}, {"text": " don't dress properly and speak.", "start": 675.26, "stop": 679.94, "id": 115}, {"text": " [...] English or even", "start": 680.28, "stop": 686.6, "id": 116}, {"text": " Brooklynese, we are prejudice, we have", "start": 686.6, "stop": 693.38, "id": 117}, {"text": " prejudice against immigrants.", "start": 693.38, "stop": 695.1, "id": 118}, {"text": " And so it goes on. These are barriers to information", "start": 695.9, "stop": 701.76, "id": 119}, {"text": " about people, their humanity and it is", "start": 701.76, "stop": 708.76, "id": 120}, {"text": " censorship as well.", "start": 708.76, "stop": 711.78, "id": 121}, {"text": " It was easier years ago when censorship came", "start": 712.78, "stop": 719.58, "id": 122}, {"text": " from religion, from churches and from", "start": 719.58, "stop": 725.74, "id": 123}, {"text": " autocracy teams.", "start": 725.74, "stop": 728.58, "id": 124}, {"text": " So I created a right to know project and", "start": 730.6000000000001, "stop": 737.54, "id": 125}, {"text": " since I was not able to get very good jobs", "start": 737.54, "stop": 743.84, "id": 126}, {"text": " or even jobs period after I had been in jail,", "start": 743.84, "stop": 748.16, "id": 127}, {"text": " I found a wonderful nonprofit library.", "start": 750.5, "stop": 756.42, "id": 128}, {"text": " A activist data center in Oakland and we had this project which I", "start": 758.58, "stop": 765.42, "id": 129}, {"text": " had for issues of", "start": 765.42, "stop": 771.66, "id": 130}, {"text": " ancologies of the varieties of covert and overt", "start": 771.66, "stop": 778.28, "id": 131}, {"text": " censorship barriers to information.", "start": 778.28, "stop": 783.44, "id": 132}, {"text": " The other thing of course that I would like to talk about is what happened when", "start": 785.14, "stop": 791.78, "id": 133}, {"text": " two FBI agents appeared at my door at age 15", "start": 791.78, "stop": 798.64, "id": 134}, {"text": " in the morning on January 11th, 1971.", "start": 798.64, "stop": 804.76, "id": 135}, {"text": " I invited them upstairs to my apartment and I asked what was this all", "start": 808.42, "stop": 815.4, "id": 136}, {"text": " about and they said well you will know if you will answer some questions.", "start": 815.4, "stop": 821.64, "id": 137}, {"text": " But before that they read to me a statement that I did not have to", "start": 821.64, "stop": 828.6, "id": 138}, {"text": " answer but I have a right to call a lawyer. Are you hearing", "start": 828.6, "stop": 834.16, "id": 139}, {"text": " me? Yes.", "start": 834.16, "stop": 836.9, "id": 140}, {"text": " Yes. And I said", "start": 836.9, "stop": 843.86, "id": 141}, {"text": " if you want to know what this is all about, they said, they repeated it.", "start": 843.86, "stop": 849.62, "id": 142}, {"text": " What they said if you start answering questions you will know.", "start": 850.82, "stop": 855.14, "id": 143}, {"text": " Well, I said I preferred not to.", "start": 855.8000000000001, "stop": 858.72, "id": 144}, {"text": " Oh, we have some photographs that we'd like you to look at and I'm sure it wasn't", "start": 860.44, "stop": 866.76, "id": 145}, {"text": " for my enjoyment. So I said thank you but I prefer not to.", "start": 866.76, "stop": 872.64, "id": 146}, {"text": " Well, they gave me something. It was a subpoena to", "start": 873.5, "stop": 879.98, "id": 147}, {"text": " appear in the federal building in Harrisburg. I was living in", "start": 879.98, "stop": 886.06, "id": 148}, {"text": " Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, which is the center of Pennsylvania,", "start": 886.06, "stop": 892.56, "id": 149}, {"text": " very, very much in the country.", "start": 893.2, "stop": 895.34, "id": 150}, {"text": " It was four hours to New York, four hours to Pittsburgh, four hours to", "start": 896.04, "stop": 901.82, "id": 151}, {"text": " Philadelphia. It was really in the center of a very beautiful, very", "start": 901.82, "stop": 908.72, "id": 152}, {"text": " beautiful country.", "start": 908.72, "stop": 911.12, "id": 153}, {"text": " And I was the head of the reference department at the Bucknell", "start": 913.12, "stop": 918.96, "id": 154}, {"text": " University, not in Berkeley, of course.", "start": 918.96, "stop": 922.94, "id": 155}, {"text": " [...] in Harrisburg about 60 miles", "start": 923.6600000000001, "stop": 929.5, "id": 156}, {"text": " and I already knew that strangely enough what I", "start": 929.5, "stop": 936.2, "id": 157}, {"text": " called my assistant to tell her that I had two visitors, she answered", "start": 936.2, "stop": 942.98, "id": 158}, {"text": " with her pure Oklahoma funny name.", "start": 942.98, "stop": 947.16, "id": 159}, {"text": " I have two visitors too. Well, by the time we came to the library", "start": 948.16, "stop": 954.9, "id": 160}, {"text": " we discovered that two students had been visited by", "start": 954.9, "stop": 960.54, "id": 161}, {"text": " Efny, two agents apiece", "start": 960.54, "stop": 965.96, "id": 162}, {"text": " at the exact same time.", "start": 965.96, "stop": 969.52, "id": 163}, {"text": " We got in touch with the ACLU and discovered that they were a little", "start": 970.3900000000001, "stop": 977.28, "id": 164}, {"text": " concerned because this kind of military presence, you know, each coming at", "start": 977.28, "stop": 984.2, "id": 165}, {"text": " the exactly the same time and one of my visitors came from", "start": 984.2, "stop": 991.16, "id": 166}, {"text": " Florida to do this presentation.", "start": 991.16, "stop": 994.06, "id": 167}, {"text": " And then I have this subpoena said that it was", "start": 995.22, "stop": 1002.0, "id": 168}, {"text": " for the grand jury in Harrisburg and none of the lawyers knew that", "start": 1002.0, "stop": 1008.24, "id": 169}, {"text": " there was a grand jury sitting.", "start": 1008.24, "stop": 1009.92, "id": 170}, {"text": " So there was a little concern about them. It is", "start": 1010.8, "stop": 1016.88, "id": 171}, {"text": " frightening if you let it be,", "start": 1016.88, "stop": 1021.66, "id": 172}, {"text": " to be served something, not knowing anything about it.", "start": 1022.84, "stop": 1027.3000000000002, "id": 173}, {"text": " That evening, still not knowing, I discovered what it was all", "start": 1027.3, "stop": 1034.24, "id": 174}, {"text": " about and it had to do with a group of people Catholic,", "start": 1034.24, "stop": 1040.78, "id": 175}, {"text": " Catholic priests and nuns and students and faculty members who", "start": 1042.36, "stop": 1049.32, "id": 176}, {"text": " were against the diemno war and that war", "start": 1049.32, "stop": 1056.32, "id": 177}, {"text": " by the time that [...] States, I was against the diemno war", "start": 1056.32, "stop": 1063.2, "id": 178}, {"text": " and I was against it from the time we sat with the United States sat.", "start": 1063.2, "stop": 1069.14, "id": 179}, {"text": " Military advisors in 1961, I think,", "start": 1071.3999999999999, "stop": 1077.72, "id": 180}, {"text": " which is the path that was used in the character.", "start": 1079.52, "stop": 1084.08, "id": 181}, {"text": " Somebody helped me with the Korea. That's what they did", "start": 1088.98, "stop": 1095.72, "id": 182}, {"text": " first. In any case, we had to come every day", "start": 1095.72, "stop": 1101.8, "id": 183}, {"text": " to the Federal Building in", "start": 1101.8, "stop": 1106.52, "id": 184}, {"text": " Harrisburg.", "start": 1106.52, "stop": 1108.94, "id": 185}, {"text": " And we became friends with nuns,", "start": 1109.94, "stop": 1116.1, "id": 186}, {"text": " priests and other people.", "start": 1116.58, "stop": 1120.02, "id": 187}, {"text": " And the ACLU lawyer", "start": 1120.02, "stop": 1126.92, "id": 188}, {"text": " that we had was enormously helpful. Each person went", "start": 1126.92, "stop": 1133.46, "id": 189}, {"text": " in and was questioned.", "start": 1133.46, "stop": 1138.46, "id": 190}, {"text": " And the lawyer had made sure that we had immunity. This is another", "start": 1139.1200000000001, "stop": 1145.4, "id": 191}, {"text": " lawyer action", "start": 1145.4, "stop": 1150.8, "id": 192}, {"text": " that helps you.", "start": 1150.8, "stop": 1154.42, "id": 193}, {"text": " That things you say or things that others say that you", "start": 1154.42, "stop": 1161.3, "id": 194}, {"text": " were doing or that you were hearing doesn't", "start": 1161.3, "stop": 1167.78, "id": 195}, {"text": " end in putting you behind", "start": 1167.78, "stop": 1171.76, "id": 196}, {"text": " bars.", "start": 1171.76, "stop": 1175.16, "id": 197}, {"text": " [...] said, oh,", "start": 1175.16, "stop": 1180.3, "id": 198}, {"text": " I'm talking too much.", "start": 1181.14, "stop": 1184.34, "id": 199}, {"text": " The story is then that we did answer", "start": 1187.86, "stop": 1194.56, "id": 200}, {"text": " questions at that point and that we went home.", "start": 1194.56, "stop": 1198.7, "id": 201}, {"text": " And I resigned from Bucknell University because I", "start": 1198.7, "stop": 1205.64, "id": 202}, {"text": " was marrying Dean Galloway in California.", "start": 1205.64, "stop": 1208.72, "id": 203}, {"text": " I was expected that that would be the end of that. But a subpoena was served", "start": 1208.72, "stop": 1215.6, "id": 204}, {"text": " to me in 1972. And at that point, the", "start": 1215.6, "stop": 1221.6, "id": 205}, {"text": " lawyer who was hired, when I told", "start": 1221.6, "stop": 1228.46, "id": 206}, {"text": " him that just what happens if I refuse?", "start": 1228.46, "stop": 1233.0, "id": 207}, {"text": " Because I had thought that this is my opportunity", "start": 1233.0, "stop": 1239.6, "id": 208}, {"text": " that the government had presented me this. I am", "start": 1239.6, "stop": 1245.22, "id": 209}, {"text": " comparatively shy person. And speaking is difficult", "start": 1245.22, "stop": 1251.9, "id": 210}, {"text": " for me, as you say.", "start": 1251.9, "stop": 1253.74, "id": 211}, {"text": " And here was an opportunity for me to say, no, I would not", "start": 1253.74, "stop": 1260.68, "id": 212}, {"text": " go along with undermining the rights to dissent with the", "start": 1260.68, "stop": 1267.66, "id": 213}, {"text": " presence of spies.", "start": 1267.66, "stop": 1269.16, "id": 214}, {"text": " And I'm sorry I cannot go into all of these things because the time is short.", "start": 1269.16, "stop": 1275.56, "id": 215}, {"text": " I was very happy to be able to say no. And I did land in jail", "start": 1276.22, "stop": 1283.0, "id": 216}, {"text": " for 20 days because although it was expected", "start": 1283.0, "stop": 1289.84, "id": 217}, {"text": " to last three months,", "start": 1289.84, "stop": 1294.24, "id": 218}, {"text": " the defense, the people who are defending themselves against", "start": 1296.3599999999997, "stop": 1302.3, "id": 219}, {"text": " this, decided that they were not going to speak. How should we act this time around? That there are a few", "start": 1487.46, "stop": 1493.28, "id": 247}, {"text": " barriers of censorship, explicit barriers to access information.", "start": 1493.28, "stop": 1499.98, "id": 248}, {"text": " I found having the internet archive be", "start": 1499.98, "stop": 1506.96, "id": 249}, {"text": " a library and calling myself a librarian helps", "start": 1506.96, "stop": 1513.74, "id": 250}, {"text": " answer a lot of questions. And there's ways that we can perform our new rules", "start": 1513.74, "stop": 1519.88, "id": 251}, {"text": " going forward, the digital rules, along the path that we've seen before.", "start": 1519.88, "stop": 1524.46, "id": 252}, {"text": " So I thank you very much for getting an honor and an award. So the", "start": 1554.86, "stop": 1560.98, "id": 259}, {"text": " Patriot Act is this piece of legislation that was", "start": 1560.98, "stop": 1567.62, "id": 260}, {"text": " passed just after September 11.", "start": 1567.62, "stop": 1569.46, "id": 261}, {"text": " And obviously, it had been in preparation beforehand because of a little", "start": 1569.46, "stop": 1574.18, "id": 262}, {"text": " sophistication of it. But one of the provisions was a thing called National", "start": 1574.18, "stop": 1577.96, "id": 263}, {"text": " Security letters, which allowed anyone in law enforcement to ask anybody a demand", "start": 1577.96, "stop": 1584.28, "id": 264}, {"text": " to give information and under certain stipulations rolling in a", "start": 1584.28, "stop": 1591.24, "id": 265}, {"text": " very short period of time to answer.", "start": 1591.24, "stop": 1592.9, "id": 266}, {"text": " And you're not allowed to talk to anybody about it. You're not allowed to say", "start": 1594.42, "stop": 1599.58, "id": 267}, {"text": " that it never came in. You're only allowed to ask people that are necessary for", "start": 1599.58, "stop": 1606.28, "id": 268}, {"text": " answering the question and then can't ever see anything about it ever again. It's", "start": 1606.28, "stop": 1610.98, "id": 269}, {"text": " a really horrific law.", "start": 1610.98, "stop": 1612.5, "id": 270}, {"text": " And it was used lots and lots and lots of times. We couldn't even quite figure", "start": 1613.7199999999998, "stop": 1617.72, "id": 271}, {"text": " out how often it was used. The Democrats, when they were asking for", "start": 1617.72, "stop": 1621.16, "id": 272}, {"text": " reauthorization, demanded there was a provision to go and say how much it's been", "start": 1621.16, "stop": 1626.14, "id": 273}, {"text": " used and there was never complying with it.", "start": 1626.14, "stop": 1642.48, "id": 274}, {"text": " And it was over 200,000 times with this particular demand and they said it was", "start": 1642.98, "stop": 1649.1, "id": 275}, {"text": " very difficult to go and find out how many times it worked because", "start": 1649.1, "stop": 1652.26, "id": 276}, {"text": " a lot of them were done orally.", "start": 1652.26, "stop": 1653.84, "id": 277}, {"text": " There was just somebody calling up on the phone and saying, oh, y'all followed up", "start": 1654.78, "stop": 1658.34, "id": 278}, {"text": " with a demand letter, tell me now. There's massive abuse of power.", "start": 1658.34, "stop": 1663.96, "id": 279}, {"text": " So our lawyers, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, got a visit from the FBI", "start": 1665.7599999999998, "stop": 1672.74, "id": 280}, {"text": " demanding information about a patron of the legitimate argument.", "start": 1672.74, "stop": 1677.12, "id": 281}, {"text": " So they came over after they had the FBI and said, that's bad news. And", "start": 1680.54, "stop": 1685.62, "id": 282}, {"text": " there's this demand for information and you're not allowed to tell them about it.", "start": 1685.62, "stop": 1690.94, "id": 283}, {"text": " And I said, what do I, what can I do? What are my options? He said, well, you can", "start": 1691.58, "stop": 1697.04, "id": 284}, {"text": " be able to buy. Or the only way to say no is to sue the federal government.", "start": 1697.04, "stop": 1703.6, "id": 285}, {"text": " And fortunately, the Electronic Frontier Foundation would be happy to take the", "start": 1706.46, "stop": 1710.72, "id": 286}, {"text": " case for a bond. And the ACLU said that they would be happy to take the case", "start": 1710.72, "stop": 1716.82, "id": 287}, {"text": " for a bond. So thank you.", "start": 1716.82, "stop": 1718.54, "id": 288}, {"text": " So without consulting the court, without consulting my family, without consulting", "start": 1724.32, "stop": 1731.16, "id": 289}, {"text": " anybody, I had to make a decision.", "start": 1731.16, "stop": 1732.88, "id": 290}, {"text": " Does this organization sue the federal government?", "start": 1733.94, "stop": 1736.02, "id": 291}, {"text": " Because it's very dissimilar.", "start": 1737.48, "stop": 1738.4, "id": 292}, {"text": " And so the answer was yes, sue them.", "start": 1740.34, "stop": 1743.08, "id": 293}, {"text": " [...] the EFF and the ACLU were", "start": 1743.08, "stop": 1749.74, "id": 294}, {"text": " fantastic about it. And I learned some other things. Why you should", "start": 1749.74, "stop": 1753.74, "id": 295}, {"text": " contribute to the ACLU and the EFF?", "start": 1753.74, "stop": 1755.42, "id": 296}, {"text": " Because if we had decided to sue the federal government and pay for it, then I", "start": 1756.04, "stop": 1761.78, "id": 297}, {"text": " would have started getting questions from a accountant as to,", "start": 1761.78, "stop": 1766.36, "id": 298}, {"text": " so what are these bills?", "start": 1766.76, "stop": 1768.42, "id": 299}, {"text": " And so there's this whole piece of infrastructure that I didn't even realize, and", "start": 1769.3, "stop": 1773.5, "id": 300}, {"text": " this is a gag. So we sued and said, no, we're not going to answer these.", "start": 1773.5, "stop": 1779.68, "id": 301}, {"text": " And it puts the penalty for the criminal, so it's a jail sentence to", "start": 1781.1200000000001, "stop": 1787.52, "id": 302}, {"text": " decide that they wanted to.", "start": 1787.52, "stop": 1791.22, "id": 303}, {"text": " But it turned out very quickly the federal government, the FBI, didn't need to", "start": 1792.04, "stop": 1795.96, "id": 304}, {"text": " know this. And they started backing off immediately.", "start": 1795.96, "stop": 1799.5, "id": 305}, {"text": " They didn't need to know it. Why are they going through this? Well, they said,", "start": 1800.98, "stop": 1806.82, "id": 306}, {"text": " okay, no problem. We don't really need to know. So can we just settle down?", "start": 1806.92, "stop": 1810.68, "id": 307}, {"text": " And we said, no, we're not going to let you off on this, because we want", "start": 1810.68, "stop": 1817.5, "id": 308}, {"text": " to go and publish all of the documents back and forth.", "start": 1817.5, "stop": 1821.54, "id": 309}, {"text": " Maybe with some minor redactions, like who you were asking about, but we want to", "start": 1822.02, "stop": 1826.12, "id": 310}, {"text": " basically create a cookbook, publish on the net for anybody to see of how they", "start": 1826.12, "stop": 1832.72, "id": 311}, {"text": " too can say no to you guys.", "start": 1832.72, "stop": 1835.16, "id": 312}, {"text": " That's what we want to do. And I was", "start": 1851.62, "stop": 1856.36, "id": 316}, {"text": " worried they were going to stretch it out, so we put particular timeframes in", "start": 1856.36, "stop": 1859.56, "id": 317}, {"text": " hand to do things like particular periods of time to", "start": 1859.56, "stop": 1862.04, "id": 318}, {"text": " be able to let them know what it was.", "start": 1862.04, "stop": 1863.6, "id": 319}, {"text": " What they were afraid of was we would go to the court, and they lose their talk,", "start": 1863.6, "stop": 1867.28, "id": 320}, {"text": " which is this unbelievable set of rules.", "start": 1868.3, "stop": 1872.6, "id": 321}, {"text": " And the standpoint, soon, is ACLU was bringing a case on the East Coast to try to", "start": 1873.42, "stop": 1878.06, "id": 322}, {"text": " get the law just dismantled. What we wanted to do was go and have people be able", "start": 1878.06, "stop": 1883.42, "id": 323}, {"text": " to know how to say no, because there have been only three public cases of people", "start": 1883.42, "stop": 1888.62, "id": 324}, {"text": " saying no out of 200,000.", "start": 1888.62, "stop": 1890.78, "id": 325}, {"text": " Maybe there were more people saying no, and we didn't", "start": 1890.78, "stop": 1893.82, "id": 326}, {"text": " know about them, but I kind of did.", "start": 1893.82, "stop": 1895.48, "id": 327}, {"text": " So we negotiated all of this. There was a press event.", "start": 1897.38, "stop": 1903.98, "id": 328}, {"text": " There were photographs taken at the Internet Archive with our friendly lawyer", "start": 1904.6, "stop": 1907.7, "id": 329}, {"text": " from the EFF, the ACLU, and we posted it all.", "start": 1907.7, "stop": 1911.08, "id": 330}, {"text": " So it was basically, call these guys. You deal with a library, you move forward, you move", "start": 1941.86, "stop": 1945.44, "id": 338}, {"text": " forward, you do these things, and things work.", "start": 1945.44, "stop": 1947.96, "id": 339}, {"text": " In the aftermath of this, I told them to work, and they were thrilled to decide.", "start": 1950.8799999999999, "stop": 1957.82, "id": 340}, {"text": " Also, we got a standing ovation from the Library of Congress that is a partner of", "start": 1959.14, "stop": 1964.9, "id": 341}, {"text": " ours, and actually fun. A lot of the Internet Archive worrying, you know, as soon", "start": 1964.9, "stop": 1969.02, "id": 342}, {"text": " as the United States government, what are they worrying about?", "start": 1969.02, "stop": 1971.08, "id": 343}, {"text": " And the ovation of the group that we know.", "start": 1971.86, "stop": 1973.7, "id": 344}, {"text": " So they said, okay, great. Why don't they go and file a Freedom of Information", "start": 1977.54, "stop": 1982.28, "id": 345}, {"text": " Act request to go and find out what did they know about", "start": 1982.28, "stop": 1986.24, "id": 346}, {"text": " the Internet Archive in Brewster Cale?", "start": 1986.24, "stop": 1987.86, "id": 347}, {"text": " So I did this, and they came back and said, never heard of", "start": 1988.56, "stop": 1992.66, "id": 348}, {"text": " you. Don't have anything on you.", "start": 1992.66, "stop": 1994.52, "id": 349}, {"text": " This is at the same time that the judicial committee in", "start": 1995.8600000000001, "stop": 2002.82, "id": 350}, {"text": " the Senate went and wrote a letter to the head of the FBI state.", "start": 2002.82, "stop": 2008.52, "id": 351}, {"text": " So what were you thinking of? With the re-accertation of the Patriot Act, they", "start": 2009.2, "stop": 2014.26, "id": 352}, {"text": " specifically made it so you couldn't do this against libraries.", "start": 2014.26, "stop": 2017.26, "id": 353}, {"text": " And we were a library. So how can you imagine this? So this letter was sent over.", "start": 2018.1, "stop": 2024.68, "id": 354}, {"text": " The head of the FBI had said in a press conference that, oh, absolutely, this is", "start": 2025.34, "stop": 2031.88, "id": 355}, {"text": " a central tool every time for our white Indian community.", "start": 2031.88, "stop": 2036.12, "id": 356}, {"text": " And obviously that's not true, but they named us, the head of the FBI,", "start": 2037.62, "stop": 2042.6, "id": 357}, {"text": " named us in a press conference.", "start": 2042.76, "stop": 2044.5, "id": 358}, {"text": " So when the FBI goes, never heard of you, it's like, what? So I wrote back, and I", "start": 2045.54, "stop": 2050.96, "id": 359}, {"text": " said, wait a minute.", "start": 2050.96, "stop": 2052.68, "id": 360}, {"text": " These things, they're not these things. They wrote back, so", "start": 2053.58, "stop": 2056.02, "id": 361}, {"text": " nope, never heard of you.", "start": 2056.02, "stop": 2058.02, "id": 362}, {"text": " So there really is a breakdown going on inside of our government. I'm really just becoming aware of it now.", "start": 2063.1, "stop": 2065.8, "id": 364}, {"text": " But there's no problem. Right. But there are lots of implicit", "start": 2085.86, "stop": 2090.2, "id": 369}, {"text": " things that are going on.", "start": 2090.2, "stop": 2092.5, "id": 370}, {"text": " Whether it's with WikiLeaks, which is going on at the moment, and being able to", "start": 2092.5, "stop": 2098.68, "id": 371}, {"text": " have a minor government staffer that are in the elected part of the government,", "start": 2098.68, "stop": 2103.66, "id": 372}, {"text": " going to threaten Amazon, and then they go and take things offline, or taking", "start": 2103.82, "stop": 2109.78, "id": 373}, {"text": " things away from DNS servers.", "start": 2109.78, "stop": 2111.7, "id": 374}, {"text": " All of that is seriously bad news. So the Internet Archive, which has been", "start": 2112.24, "stop": 2116.48, "id": 375}, {"text": " actively archiving the WikiLeaks websites, has made a searchable index, a", "start": 2116.48, "stop": 2123.28, "id": 376}, {"text": " searchable web page over time, available on the map in full for free access", "start": 2123.28, "stop": 2129.94, "id": 377}, {"text": " in ways that we do not track our users.", "start": 2129.94, "stop": 2133.68, "id": 378}, {"text": " So we think that this is good steps in other ways that are going on.", "start": 2134.28, "stop": 2138.34, "id": 379}, {"text": " It's also things that are going on in the commercial world that are really", "start": 2138.9, "stop": 2142.7, "id": 380}, {"text": " affecting access to information.", "start": 2142.7, "stop": 2145.28, "id": 381}, {"text": " And it's the commercialization, properization of information.", "start": 2145.28, "stop": 2149.58, "id": 382}, {"text": " I think the most obvious is the Google Books problem.", "start": 2150.44, "stop": 2153.42, "id": 383}, {"text": " So Google Books has worked with some great libraries that are publicly", "start": 2154.12, "stop": 2157.6, "id": 384}, {"text": " financed and get tax deduction.", "start": 2157.6, "stop": 2159.36, "id": 385}, {"text": " They've digitized these books and are making them available on the", "start": 2159.82, "stop": 2165.52, "id": 386}, {"text": " google.com website.", "start": 2165.52, "stop": 2167.54, "id": 387}, {"text": " And they've taken public domain books, digitized them, and made them available", "start": 2167.54, "stop": 2173.42, "id": 388}, {"text": " again with restrictions.", "start": 2173.42, "stop": 2174.98, "id": 389}, {"text": " So they're locking up the public domain.", "start": 2175.54, "stop": 2177.88, "id": 390}, {"text": " They've given digital copies back to the libraries.", "start": 2178.04, "stop": 2182.02, "id": 391}, {"text": " But with so many restrictions, most of the libraries turned down.", "start": 2182.46, "stop": 2185.46, "id": 392}, {"text": " So we now know that the libraries are starting to weed their collections based on", "start": 2186.3, "stop": 2192.04, "id": 393}, {"text": " having these books be electronically accessible at Google, so they don't need the", "start": 2192.04, "stop": 2196.32, "id": 394}, {"text": " physical copies anymore.", "start": 2196.32, "stop": 2197.84, "id": 395}, {"text": " So even public domain books are getting locked up based on commercial issues.", "start": 2198.66, "stop": 2202.92, "id": 396}, {"text": " Then there's the outer print materials, which Google has this whole new strategy,", "start": 2203.58, "stop": 2208.3, "id": 397}, {"text": " which is embedding in their Google Books 7, which is a private deal with a couple", "start": 2208.64, "stop": 2214.68, "id": 398}, {"text": " of trade associations, where the individuals from the trade association would", "start": 2214.68, "stop": 2219.04, "id": 399}, {"text": " make millions of dollars personally to sign onto this.", "start": 2219.04, "stop": 2223.3, "id": 400}, {"text": " And then Google, actually, as it would play out, would have the only", "start": 2223.3, "stop": 2229.9, "id": 401}, {"text": " copies of outer print materials that would then be legally available.", "start": 2229.9, "stop": 2234.3, "id": 402}, {"text": " And then the strategy for imprint is getting different,", "start": 2235.92, "stop": 2238.66, "id": 403}, {"text": " but also just as we're creating.", "start": 2238.68, "stop": 2240.62, "id": 404}, {"text": " So there's a wave here.", "start": 2241.5, "stop": 2244.1, "id": 405}, {"text": " So our reaction is, let's go and digitize the public domain and give it away for", "start": 2244.46, "stop": 2248.68, "id": 406}, {"text": " free, and keep the public domain public domain.", "start": 2248.68, "stop": 2252.5, "id": 407}, {"text": " We're working now with 200 libraries.", "start": 2252.7, "stop": 2254.72, "id": 408}, {"text": " We've scanned ourselves over 1 million books.", "start": 2255.6, "stop": 2257.82, "id": 409}, {"text": " There's about 2 million books total on the Internet Archive website, and a number", "start": 2258.6, "stop": 2262.5, "id": 410}, {"text": " of projects, including Google's, not with their permission.", "start": 2262.5, "stop": 2265.26, "id": 411}, {"text": " And these things are available for free for public download.", "start": 2266.66, "stop": 2271.18, "id": 412}, {"text": " For the outer print materials, to think the libraries just have to be libraries.", "start": 2271.7, "stop": 2275.6, "id": 413}, {"text": " What libraries do is they can buy books, and they make them", "start": 2275.6, "stop": 2279.6, "id": 414}, {"text": " accessible via lending.", "start": 2279.6, "stop": 2281.24, "id": 415}, {"text": " That's what we do. It's always what we've done.", "start": 2281.72, "stop": 2283.64, "id": 416}, {"text": " So we have been taking books.", "start": 2284.54, "stop": 2287.86, "id": 417}, {"text": " We have bought books, received donations, digitized them en masse, and we're", "start": 2288.38, "stop": 2293.96, "id": 418}, {"text": " making at least the outer print materials available via lending.", "start": 2293.96, "stop": 2298.12, "id": 419}, {"text": " We're protecting digital lending, so un-and-copy, and un-and-copy.", "start": 2298.5, "stop": 2302.14, "id": 420}, {"text": " And the idea that taking these, digitize them, and make them available with the", "start": 2302.14, "stop": 2307.18, "id": 421}, {"text": " same protections as what the publishers are doing electronically to", "start": 2307.18,
